Angelo Mussoni: My story

With John and Julie Gottman at Level 3 Training, July 2019

I graduated in Psychology from the University of Padua in 1999 and started out working with multi-problem families referred by social services.

From 2001 I provided home-based educational and psychological support to families, so that children could stay at home rather than go into residential care. Out of that experience, in 2003, I co-founded AltreStrade to offer an alternative to removing children from their families. For years we also worked in the intercultural and disability fields.

In 2019 I moved into full-time private practice and took my first training with John and Julie Gottman, Level 3 (pictured). It was a turning point: I decided to focus on couples, the core of every family, completed my training as a psychotherapist, and in 2024 became a Certified Gottman Therapist, the first in Italy. Alongside the Gottman Method, I trained in other couples therapy approaches that I find integrate well with it: EFT, PACT, PET-C and DBT for couples.

Couples with children remain a large part of my work. My years with families shape the attention I bring to every couple session: when two partners fight, their children feel it; when they repair, their children feel that too. It is also why I became a Bringing Baby Home Educator, trained by the Gottman Institute in its program for the transition to parenthood: the stage when, as the Gottmans’ research shows, most couples see satisfaction drop and conflict rise.

In 2026 I added a new chapter: teaching. In August, as a trainer-in-training, I co-led Master Trainer Vagdevi Meunier’s Level 1 Training in Austin, Texas, and presented one of its lectures. At the end of the mentorship the Gottman Institute authorized me to deliver the Level 1 Training in Italian, the first level of the Method’s certification path.

How I work with couples

Disarming conflict is at the center of my daily work.

I start from the Gottman Method and integrate it with EFT (Sue Johnson), PACT (Stan Tatkin), PET-C (Brent Atkinson) and DBT for couples (Alan Fruzzetti), drawing also on CBT and ACT, from a diversity-affirming perspective.

I work with couples to build a mutual alliance, including around each partner’s individual story (trauma, ADHD, neurodiversity, grief) and recovery from infidelity.

We begin with an assessment of your strengths and areas of challenge, agree on a shared goal, and close each session with an action plan. The full process is on the Couple therapy page.

Training

I also teach: the Gottman Institute’s official Level 1 training, in Italian, for Italian-speaking clinicians, with free webinars around it. If you are an English-speaking therapist, you can leave your details to hear about webinars and future English-language events.
